Chicken on the Bone

Tonight we had chicken on the bone for dinner. Chicken on the bone, drum sticks, chicken legs, it's all the same. Chicken on the bone is Kendra's all time favorite dinner. She loves to hold the sticky piece of meat in her hands and devour it. So tonight I was watching her eat her chicken on the bone with such bliss and I was reminded of a time when she was three years old. We were having chicken on the bone for dinner before heading to our friends house to celebrate Mr..."s birthday. (you know who you are) She was sooo excited to be having her favorite dinner that she was sure he would share in the same excitement as her. So she saved one of the chewed up bones, put it in a zip lock baggie, and presented it to him for his birthday. She was sooo proud of this sacrificial gift that she was presenting to him for his birthday!! I will never forget the looks on both of their faces. One of pure discuss trying to be kind, and the other of pure pride and excitement....I love three year olds!!

When I posted the other day I was totally distracted. Our project took longer than expected so everything was sort of crunched for time. And I was determined to to blog, only because I am the kind of person who will most likely forget and never do it. So, poor Lexi, we missed her ice skating lesson. :( I felt sooo bad. She forgave me but I am still beating myself up for it.
Anyhow, my point to all of this was supposed to be that through all of my distraction I intended on writing about how much FUN the girls had with this project. (We are not done by the way) And I was trying so hard to make it clear what we were doing, (did i make it clear?), that I missed the fun part.
So with that in mind...Alexis in between finishing each little alphabet symbol would throw her hands up and YAHOO at each accomplished letter. I learned that Kendra is a perfectionist. Not only did she have her engravings done but she had to make sure they were done perfect and that there were no little scraps left along the way. This made it fun for the girls to learn about some of our ancient history. We are finishing up next week and will put together a little portfolio on a poster board. That's to come.

Babylonian Times

We are currently studying the early history of Babylon. In learning about the Sumerians, what they did, how they lived, what they believed in, and where they lived, we also learned about how they communicated with each other. They had their own writing which first was called "hieroglyphs", which was basically picture like symbols scratched onto lumps of clay. The symbols later were modified into what is called "cuneiform."...So here in this picture the girls are creating their own alphabet to then put onto a cylinder seal.
A cylinder seal is like a stamp with your signature (however that may be) or family/business image/sign/logo on it. Only 5000 years ago it was all carved out of clay. So next the girls had to figure out how carve a mirror image of what they wanted on their seal. Here Alexis is writing her name backwards using her own alphabet.
Once they figured out how to write backwards, in another language, they then had to transfer onto their clay cylinder, (not yet a cylinder).Alexis's name is above and Kendra's name is below.

They clay needs to dry and then get sharpened up. Next we will create the tablet that we roll the seal into.

This has been a very fun study and the girls have really enjoyed it!
